About Gold
Pure Gold is called 24 Karat or 24K. The "K" is for "karat" which is a measure of the purity of Gold. "Carat" is different however, it measures the weight of diamonds. More about diamonds later, on a differernt web page.
24K Gold is always a deep rich orange shade of yellow "Gold" color similar to the Gold shown on this page. Another way of expressing gold content is .999 fine gold (999 out of 1000 parts gold).
22K Gold is 22/24 Pure or 91.7% pure. The remainder of 8.3% is made up of one or more other metals that are alloyed (mixed with) pure gold to make it stronger, harder and different colors. The color of the metal alloys very much determines the color of the gold.
In much of Asia 22K Gold is very popular. In Western countries, such as the USA, it is 14K and 18K Gold that are most popular. For the sake of comparisons, 18K Gold is 75% pure Gold and 14K Gold is 58.3% pure.
"Plumb" Gold. The term plumb indicates that the purity (14K, 18K) stamped on Gold jewelry is exactly the purity specified by the stamp. It means that 14K is not less than 14K; likewise for all others when sold as plumb gold. This is more important than one might realize because there have been manufacturers of high priced Gold jewelry who have been caught and heavily fined for selling lesser purity grades, 13K as 14K or 16K as 18K. Consider the mathematical differences: 16K is 66.6% pure Gold, 18K is 75% pure gold. The difference represents an overcharge of 8.3%. The Gold at Golden Touch is always plumb Gold.
It is said, and quite accurately, that Gold is incorruptible; it cannot tarnish or decay. For all of known history Gold has been a "store of value". Just think about the value of ancient and present Gold coins and other Gold objects and the phrase "store of value" takes on a whole new meaning.
